Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.
Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Athletes are granted the right to contest specific calls from the official, following the practice currently in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development follows just a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine other situations, including:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can initiate.
Practical Application
A recent incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at all of its events.
Other Changes
Another change at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was out or in.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
